Detroit Lakes is a small city and the county seat of Becker County, Minnesota. The city has four neighborhoods and is approximately the 105th largest community in the state. Around 27.8% of adults over twenty-five hold four-year degrees or better, which is well above the national education average for U.S. communities. The little city is warm, welcoming and somewhat racially and ethnically diverse. The two largest populations, in the city, by race are Caucasian and Native American and the most common ancestries among residents are German, Norwegian and Swedish. English is the primary language in Detroit Lakes, followed by Portuguese and Chinese. The city spans 16.2 square miles, 11.2 square miles of land area and the remaining 5 square miles of water area. In 2018, the estimated base population was 9,286 but the town’s population increases in the summer due to the tourist activity. In 2017, the estimated median household income, in Detroit Lakes, was $42,481 and the estimated per capita income was $28,848. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $150,977, the mean price on all housing units was $25984 and the median gross rent was $769.
The first community in the area was Tylerville or Tylertown, but the community that would one day be Detroit Lakes began with the simple name, Detroit. The community was founded in 1871 by Colonel George Johnston. With the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad the area was opened up settlers flocked in quickly. Later, in 1926 it was changed to Detroit Lakes. By 1881, the community was officially incorporated. The town seemed plagued by fires in its early history. In both 1888 and again in 1914. The second fire destroyed 22 buildings, including the luxurious Hotel Minnesota, which provided lodging for many early travelers.
Detroit Lakes is a beautiful community and the lakes are quite popular for boating, wake sports, jet skiing, scuba diving, swimming, fishing and more. The Beach at Detroit Lake hosts an annual Independence Day Celebration, that draws visitors from far and wide, which culminates in a fantastic fireworks display. Winter tourist activities include ice fishing, snow- boarding, snow-mobiling, and downhill skiing as well as cross country.
